This is a tricky subject. Refined sugars discouraged for use in children under 2 years. But “sugar” for lack of a better word is important for the growth of a young child. Carbohydrates are a major source of sugars and the are the major class of food in pasta, cereals, etc. So, sugar (carbohydrates) are beneficial for kids in the right proportion. Ultimately, refined sugar is to be used in moderation for kids over 2 years (this includes drinks, snacks, biscuits and cookies and the likes. Balanced diet is the goal for healthy kids.
It’ll be unwise to deny your 1 year old refined sugar but give ribena and biscuits and claim righteous

That’s what I did for my son starting from almost 14 months before I finally weaned completely at just over 15 months. It was a smooth transitioning. The more he enjoys regular food, the easier it is for you both
